Our New President

Dr Santha Bhattacharji has been elected our new President in succession to the Very Revd Alex Wedderspoon and we are delighted that Santha has accepted this invitation. We have been privileged to hear her speak at several of our conferences over the years.

Dr Bhattacharji will bring a wealth of experience both academic, psychical and spiritual to the life and work of the Fellowship. She read Old and Middle English at Oxford as an undergraduate before spending six years as a nun in an enclosed Anglican community and then embarked on her doctorate on the influence of medieval liturgy on Middle English Literature. She has been a member of the English Faculty of Oxford for over 20 years and came to St Benet's Hall, Oxford in 2004. Santha has particular interest in the Middle English mystics, exploring their statements and behaviours which may seem irrational and bizarre from a modern perspective, but which become coherent and meaningful when set in their medieval cultural context. Her book on the spirituality of Margery Kempe, God is an Earthquake, is a fascinating study of one such mystic as well as her contributions to Prayer and Thought in Monastic Tradition.

Dr Bhattacharji has spoken to the Fellowship on several aspects of Christian theology including incarnational spirituality as well as paranormal experiences. Her time is spent at St Benet's as Senior Tutor.

We look forward to working with her as she leads the Fellowship into the next phase of its life.
